World Theatre Training Institute
invites you to the
presentation of Dr. Jurij Alschitz’s book
The Art of Not Being Ready
which opens his new series
WRONG DIRECTING
on
18 October 15:00 – 16:00 (UTC+2) online
Professional education teaches us to be prepared. But what if the purpose of education is to teach us not to be ready? — asks Jurij Alschitz.
A director can read everything about a play — and stop seeing the play itself.
They can find an idea — and stop looking for anything else.
They can accumulate so many answers that there is no room left for questions.
How can knowledge avoid closing the door to the unknown? How can experience avoid turning into habit? How can we leave room in our preparation for what does not yet exist?
The book presents two original methods of preparing for a performance and more than 50 exercises and tasks. They offer no ready-made solutions and do not determine the performance in advance, but give it a chance to emerge differently — not as the director imagined it.
For Jurij Alschitz, a performance is a living being. So the task is not to force it to become what we expected to see, but to give it the chance to surprise us.
This book is primarily for directors. But actors may also find it interesting to consider how to prepare for a role without preparing it in advance, and theatre teachers how to prepare a class without knowing beforehand how it will end.
World Theatre Training Institute invites you to meet Jurij Alschitz and to discover his authorial series WRONG DIRECTING.
Welcome to discover an art that is rarely taught — the art of not being ready.
This open lecture is highly recommended to anyone interested in the programme School of Directing, which begins in 2026
