The magical power of dialogue
Dialogue has been and is being scientifically researched in almost all disciplines, but where it was born, on the stage, it ekes out a shadowy existence. The stage as a reflection of our society shows the monologue and celebrates the monological existence. Here, the ego is regarded as the key to success!
Question: What is more interesting on stage – one monologue, two monologues or the exchange between two individuals who are less interested in propagating their own position than in recognising a truth that is still unknown to them?
The answer seems easy; in theory. However, the mere commitment to exchange or dialogue does not mean that a dialogue is being conducted. The question of the definition of dialogue already leads to confusing answers, as does the question of different forms of dialogue, their techniques etc.. It is simply not part of regular acting training. This much can be said: if two or more people speak on stage, it is far from being a dialogue.
Dear Actors,
