Exercises – an underestimated tool for teaching and rehearsals

EXERCISES
an amazing tool for directing and teaching

Training as Method for teaching and rehearsals
The path to a production in collective creativity

Dear teaching and directing colleagues,
Dear curious actors,

We all know that there is no perfect method – but you can be methodical! And – you can develop your own methodology. Dr. Jurij Alschitz is a particular proponent of this open form: everyone, whether actor, director or teacher, creates their own system.

EXERCISES are not mere sporting exercises, but cleverly selected and simple tasks that gradually become more complicated and can ultimately even grow into a complete performance.
The real art lies in first knowing many possible components, then combining them in new ways and adapting them to the respective material or learning objective.

How is a good EXERCISE put together? What principles is it based on? What should it achieve in detail? Where should it lead? Anyone who has gained a certain amount of experience will easily invent their own new EXERCISES. In this way, the process of teaching becomes an artistic-creative – and fullfilling experience; directors are given the tools to transfer their ideas in such a way that they are invented by the actors themselves and made their own. Only then will both – actors and ideas – remain alive on stage for a long time.

The World Theatre Training Institute invites everyone to explore this topic online from 9 – 12 May.
Experience first-hand the world of EXERCISES as it was invented by Jurij Alschitz and developed over the years. Gain an insight into the philosophy of “training as method”.
